The Garden School began in 1995 and was revived in 2025, after a Covid hiatus, into a world with very different gardening concerns. Now, how to garden in a changed climate of saturated winters and summer droughts is uppermost in our minds.

The school already has an excellent reputation for providing a thorough education in hands-on gardening, from propagation to border design, but we will increasingly offer a variety of events including creative workshops, and talks with a more philosophical component: to contemplate what it is that makes a garden, and why they’re so important, with a particular focus on how we can work to nourish, not deplete, the soil upon which we all depend.

Fundamentally, we believe that gardening, at its best, is an extraordinary symbiosis of nature and human creativity towards the production of something that neither can achieve alone. An ethos, or something approaching it, as we move towards a more thoughtful and integrated approach.
